News Release – Two local youth receive “Golden Tickets” to National Skateboard Competition
Jackson Patton, 7, of Delaware and Gracie Bails, 10, of Marion have both received “Golden Tickets” and qualified for the National “King of the Groms” Skateboard Championship in Golden Valley, Minnesota on February 20-22, 2010. “King of the Groms” is a 12-and-under-only Skateboard Contest Series. In existence for 8 years now, the series consists of 5 qualifying stops including California (2), Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Georgia and is sponsored and run by “3rd Lair SkatePark and Skate Shop” in Minnesota.
Patton and Bails are both members of the “jpskate and Board Shop” skate team. Both were among more than 400 youth from across the country that competed to qualify for “golden tickets”. Contestants competed in “street”, “mini-ramp” and/or “bowl” contests in either the “beginner”, “intermediate” or “expert” division. Patton and Bails both qualified in the “Beginner Street” division at the final qualifying stop, Progressive Skate Park in Canton, Georgia.
Only 64 skaters qualified in the “Beginner Street” division for the Minnesota championship; Patton and Bails are the only skaters from Ohio who’ve qualified. Patton is among the youngest to qualify; Bails is one of only a few girls to have qualified. Both will travel to Minnesota, with their biggest fans (their family) in February for the championship.
Colby Gulick, 8, of Grove City, also represented the “jpskate and Board Shop” skate team at the recent Canton, Georgia qualifying stop. He competed in all three contests in the beginner division and was just 2 spots away from receiving his own “Golden Ticket” to Minnesota.
